Update, part the third

We’re back up and running behind the scenes now, but I’m incredibly tired and don’t want to risk missing anything because of that, so I’m going to get some sleep now.

But in answer to some of your questions, and comments:

I say take your time and get it right. Don’t rush things and make compromises in order to get back online sooner, because if you do, you’re just going to run into more problems and more frustration.

so if you get this up and going again will everything that was there last be here again? like my avatar, collection and posting history?

Everything is where is was. If you want to change your username, email me when we’re up and running again.

Basenotes consists of years and years of dedicated writers, including a forum post library and reviews by members of an IMMENSE value. There just isn’t an alternative “quit”; it doesn’t work that way, and can never be allowed to work that way.

The pure thought of all this information resting on one mans shoulders makes me shiver. Divide it. Make partners, turn it into something more than “one mans project”.

The signal is terrible wrong when a community like Basenotes, involving thousands of people globally, is being weighted against one mans kids and if they’re going to sleep early or not.

I know it sounds harsh and I don’t mean to devalue Grants efforts, but still I think this point has to be made.

I understand your concern, (and no the kids didn’t get to bed as early as I would have hoped). I’m partnering with a company who will take over the technical and monetization side of things, leaving me to deal with content. It will take a load off my mind, and will mean that it isn’t down to a part-time single father to deal with ‘everything’ - there will be a team in place to deal with technical problems, and hopefully I will be in a better position to build up the editorial/database/community team. May even be hiring.

I for one refuse to believe this is the end!!! I know you and Basenotes will be back, my only question is…how will we know????

I plan to continue Basenotes for as long as it is feasible. I get fed up with things occasionally, especially lately, but there is a plan going forward (see above)

I’m a new perfumer and was wondering if anyone could point me to sites where I can purchase grain alcohol? And it is a shame you are having problems. I hope you resolve them n spring back into form soon

Sadly, I’ve no idea on the grain alcohol front - hopefully you’ll be able to get some help when we’re back up and running.

I was wondering what fragrance I should wear when I’m deprived of the Basenotes experience. I don’t know, but it seems right now it’s down to a One Man Show

Thank you (almost) all for the lovely comments. And for the not so lovely comments, I quite understand.

I’m off to pick my kids up from school, make them dinner and be a dad for a bit.

Provided they go to sleep nicely, hopefully we’ll be back tonight.

Big thanks to Sucuri for clearing up some of the mess, my hosts for implementing a fix, due to something trying to “hack in over the network”, to Google for stopping showing the scary red box, and to Basenotes people that have the patience of über-saints.

A few people have asked me if Basenotes is closed permanently. It’s not, though with the amount of downtime we’ve been having lately, it might as well be.

We’ve had several problems lately, with hacks, server problems. And despite paying for upgraded servers, people to look at the site, and signing up to a security service, the site is still having problems.

We signed up with a company, Huddler, last year who are going to be taking over the technical aspects of the site, but this will take some time as they need to convert the site over to their system.

It’s got to the stage now, where I can no longer ask for your patience, as I think that’s been asked often enough. I’m sorry.

I’m not going to give up on the site, Basenotes has been part of my life for nearly 13 years now. If you’d like to, I’ll see you on the other side.

The lovely people at sucuri.net have sorted the site out. It will take a while for Google/Firefox to updates their warnings, which pretty much make the site unusable. I’ll keep the site offline while they do that.

I apologise for the inconvenience we’re all suffering lately. I’m pretty fed up with it myself, and can’t wait until all the tech stuff gets offloaded to experts later in the year!

Going to Basenotes, I get confronted with this:

I then click through to Google Webmaster Tools as the link advises me to, who tell me:

I’d rather be safe than sorry, so the site is down for the time being while I try and get it sorted. Apologies once again for more unintended downtime

Update: Midnight GMT : Google seems to know about it now, so I have more information to go on. Will get things back to normal ASAP

Regular visitors to Basenotes may have found their visits haven’t been able to be so regular lately.

Over the last week or so the site has had regular crashes, and has been offline for long periods. My hosts were trying various things to try and narrow down the solution. After several days of trying lots of different things, we’ve no come to the decision that the site is likely to need an upgraded server soon, so we may as well do it now, and hope that fixes the problem.

In the long term, we’ll be working with a company who will handle all of the technical side of things on our behalf, which will mean being able to provide a better service for all you perfume fans out there.

I’ve no idea how long the server thing’s going to take, but I’ll keep you informed.
